Hearty malts meld with a subtle balance of hops to create a dark and nurturing ale of comfort and complexity. Hints of bittersweet chocolate and espresso fill the tongue, finishing with just a touch of smoke. Not too sweet or filling, this versatile dark ale dissuades the notion that a darker beer is a stronger beer. Five varieties of roasted malts are the source of Porter’s dark color and rich taste, while two varieties of hops bring a mellow bite to this deep toasty ale.

Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer, the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling

On tap @ Beer Temple.Dark brown color, beige head. Mild aroma’s of roasted malts, chicory, cocoa & mocha. Flavor is ever so slightly sweet & roasted. Finishes with a bit of ash. Nothing extreme, fairly traditional porter.

12 oz bottle, Real thick sheets of lacing. Roasted coffee and bitter chocolate in the nose. Heavy roasted taste includes espresso, dark chocolate and light hops. Lighter hints of peat and wood. Average mouthfeel and body. Low carbonation levels. I sipped this for a while as it warmed and got the same taste throughout. It’s on the lighter side of a porter, not much complexity, but......... that’s what I like about it. Very drinkable, I got nothing negative to say about this brew. I enjoyed it a lot and will buy again.

Pours mahogany-tinged black into an English pint. Tan head with medium retention slowly recedes leaving lacing. Chocolate and coffee aromas. Medium bodied with front to back chocolate sauce and espresso. Dry mocha finish.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 10/17/10

Aroma: The nose is roasted malts, some chocolate, a little bit of bread, and some nutty notes
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a small, bubbly, tan head and some good lace
Flavor: It has a bit of malty sweetness up-front, and a pretty powerful bittersweet (leaning bitter) finish
Palate: The mouthfeel starts a bit tingly, it is medium bodied, and somewhat chalky on the finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty good Porter with a definite hoppy side to it. It has kind of a bittersweet chocolate finish to it that is pretty tasty. Almost a smokey bitterness to it. It is a pretty interest flavor, not your typical porter, but something I liked.

Third brew from this brewer to come to the LCBO. Second porter of the night to review. Pretty similar to the Canadian one I had earlier (Picaroons Man’s Best Friend Porter) in looks: dark brown with red highlights, creamy beige head, good retention, decent lacing. This one does not smell as hoppy as the other, but more on the burnt roasted malts. The hop appears in the taste though. Mild coffee and because it is more on the bitter side, I do not taste much sweet chocolate. Smooth textured mouthfeel and good drinkability. Nice bitter aftertaste. Preferred the look of the Picaroons, but this one is a bit better on the other levels. Well brewed.

Bottle. Almost black with a huge tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and some milk.Taste was slightly smoky with coffee, hops and some chocolate. Alot of carbonation. Unfortunately, the beer was little thin, still drinkable and quite pleasant.
