Our Raison D'Etre, with a little extra. This immodest brew, made with an obscene amount of malt, brown sugar and raisins, takes Belgian-style browns to new heights.

Raison D'Extra's little brother Raison D'Etre was brewed to be the ultimate beer partner for steak. Plump raisins and beet sugars give the beer a similar DNA and color to red wine.

D'Extra takes this concept to the next level. What 120 Minute IPA is to 60 Minute IPA, D'Extra is the D'Etre. We're pushing the limits of what a Belgian yeast can do (and we've discovered that's somewhere in the ballpark of 15% to 18% ABV!)

D'Extra is extremely complex and a great candidate for aging. Sip on one with a loved one now, and stash a few in your beer cellar! As Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione says, "This puppy's only getting better with age."

12 oz bottle pour split. Pours a ruby color with no head. Pure booze, liquor aroma. I thought this was going to be a booze bomb, but it actually ended up drinking really nicely. Smooth raisin, plum flavor. It has a little booze flavor to it, but what the hell, the ABV is higher than I can count in Spanish. This beer isn’t bad. If you can get over the fact that it smells like something that removes gum off your leather seats, and just drink it, it’s pretty good stuff. I’ll drink this again.

12oz bottle from Orchard Fresh, Orchard Park, NY. A rather hazy copper pour with a trace of translucent head; aroma of sowsed raisins; richy, sweet, vinous raisin taste; with soft and subtle alcohol making this a warming and extremely pleasant drink. The appearance lets down an otherwise excellent Strong Ale.

Bottle: Nearly clear, dark amber-brown with a small beige head. Raisin and mild spray paint aroma. Taste is sweet, raisins, toffee malt, fruit syrup. Sticky....amazingly sedate alcohol prescence....beautifully crafted and excellently done.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Amit. Nice clear deep reddish amber color. Pleasant aroma of malt, raisins, some other dark fruits, caramel and a bit of alcohol. Sweet and very boozy flavor with caramel and dark fruits. Quite full-bodied, very boozy. Too boozy.

On draught at Abbot’s Cellar for a beer dinner with Sam. Excellent complexity and a beautiful pour. Layers of aroma and flavor of raisin, dark fruit and slightly cloying sweet grain. This was a 2006 version served in early 2014.

12 oz. bottle, 2007 vintage. Dark mahogany color with no head. Aroma is like a raisin infused barley wine. Toffee, burnt sugar, prunes and raisins. Damn, you could go into a diabetic shock just smelling this brew!

Flavor is over the top sweet raisin, residential sugar, vinous wine notes, dates with sprinkled sugar and thick caramel candy. The alcohol is not nearly as pronounced as I would have guessed. Unexpected smoothness. Port wine finish. Lots of dark fruit and port wine, unreal flavor. Glad to have had a chance to try it. Thanks to Adam Jackson for sharing.
