Raison D'Extra's little brother Raison D'Etre was brewed to be the ultimate beer partner for steak. Plump raisins and beet sugars give the beer a similar DNA and color to red wine.
D'Extra takes this concept to the next level. What 120 Minute IPA is to 60 Minute IPA, D'Extra is the D'Etre. We're pushing the limits of what a Belgian yeast can do (and we've discovered that's somewhere in the ballpark of 15% to 18% ABV!)
D'Extra is extremely complex and a great candidate for aging. Sip on one with a loved one now, and stash a few in your beer cellar! As Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione says, "This puppy's only getting better with age."

12 oz. bottle, 2007 vintage. Dark mahogany color with no head. Aroma is like a raisin infused barley wine. Toffee, burnt sugar, prunes and raisins. Damn, you could go into a diabetic shock just smelling this brew!
Flavor is over the top sweet raisin, residential sugar, vinous wine notes, dates with sprinkled sugar and thick caramel candy. The alcohol is not nearly as pronounced as I would have guessed. Unexpected smoothness. Port wine finish. Lots of dark fruit and port wine, unreal flavor. Glad to have had a chance to try it. Thanks to Adam Jackson for sharing.

2005 12 oz. bottle. With the intimidating yellow warning cap. Brownish-black color. Pours with some fizz, but does not manage any head. Smell has sweet sherry notes, a hint of crushed green raisin. Taste has a thick mouthfeel of prune juice and more sherry. Prominent alcohol has a slight burn among the sugar. Solid layer of yeast dregs at the bottom of the bottle. Ultimately, I feel like it’s lost the character of a beer and let the fruit take over. Well, that’s the risk when finally deciding to pop one of the strongest beers in my cellar.

Very dark plum red. No head, almost flat. Smells very sweet like raisins and plums and burnt candied sugar. Taste is very insanely sweet. Loaded with dark fruits. The amount of complexity and layered flavors make this one of the best dogfish head beers I've ever had. Really incredible

Bottle at home, purchased from the Rehoboth beach bar, 24/02/13. 2007 vintage 330ml bottle. Pours a clear deep mahogony brown with a thin beige head that soon collapses to the edge in the form of bubbles. Nose is dark fruits, raisens, dates, figs, woody tones, brown sugars, toffee, booze - but not overpowering for an 18% beer. Taste comprises dark toffee, caramelised sugars, booze - but again kept in check considering the strength, raisens, dark fruits, light woody notes, dates. Full bodied, fine carbonation - pitched just right so it isn’t overly still and cloying, sweet boozey warming alcohol finish. A well balanced beer, the alcohol is well integrated for such a high ABV, good stuff!

Aroma is really sweet with lots of raisins, some ripe fruits and sugar. Flavour is also sweet with raisins, ripe fruits, sugar and caramel. Better drinkability and less disturbing sweetness than in Thomas Hardy’s Ale. Perhaps it is the CO2.

From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Vintage September 26, 2006. Pours a hazy orange brown. Fabulous aroma with muted booze and lots of raisins. Flavors of caramel, dark fruits, some vanilla, and toffee. Alchohol is quite muted, having mellowed with age. Very extraordinary.

2007 vintage shared from Deanso. Hazy brown pour with a tan head that disappears quick. Fruit, raisin and super sweet caramel aroma. Flavour is primarily super sweet caramel, noticeable raisins, malt, fruit. Low carbonation and full think sweet body. Fantastic!

33cl 07 vintage, aged in my cellar. Almost no head. Sweet raisen aroma. Cloudy amber pour. clear alcohol but no surprise since it’s 18%. Lovely beer. Pity I had only 1 bottle. Would be nice to have another one to age for a few more years

Aroma: The nose is super sweet, and shockingly enough, has tons of raisin (quite a revelation, I know)
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color, and it has a fairly small head and light lace
Flavor: Tastes really sweet, and, much like the nose, it is full of raisin flavors, some toffee/caramel too
Palate: The body is rather smooth and fairly full, it is just a touch cloying, and the booze are shockingly well hidden. Seriously, I couldn't believe how little I could taste the booze in a beer that is well over 15%. Just a wow! Truly incredible. Honestly, it is based on that fact mostly that I gave the palate the highest score.
Overall Impression: It was good to finally try this one. Certainly, this has been on my list of need to try beers for a while. Nice find guys! Aged over 4 years, so I'm sure it has developed a bit. Anyway, it is a very sweet offering, and it really is a bigger version of D'Etre. I didn't get quite as much of the D'Etre complexity from this one, but that may be due to the way it has developed into a sweetness bomb. It is still really good though. If they ever make it again, I'd be very interested to see what this one is like fresh.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Reddish red appearance with a tan head. Fairly boozy, fig, leather, caramel malty, toffee aroma. Rich caramel, toffee, fig, leather, raisin, rich malty flavor with a big warming finish. Nice beer!
