Milk stout is in a widely drunk beer in Great Britain, but it remains unknown in the Netherlands. This beer is full and malty in flavour, and also happens to have the lowest alcohol percentage of all the beers from our brewery. Milk sugar (lactose) is used to give this beer its distinct sweetness.

Sampled from tap at the brewpub. Black with a beige head. Sweetish, slightly roasty aroma of coffee, milk chocolate and caramel. Quite sweet, slightly roasty taste of caramel, chocolate and some coffee, followed by a short, slightly roasty-bitter finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite okay!

As Zwarte Riek. Opaque deep dark brown colour, large fizzy to frothy tan head, mostly lasting, fair lacing, Sweet malt nose, chocolate, dark fruits, bit coffee, roasted. Taste medium sweet, light bitter, chocomel, bit sugary, light chocolate. Medium body, sticky to watery texture, lively carbonation, mild sweetbitter aftertaste. Bit one dimensional but easy to drink.

Bottle:Black as ink, stable off-white layer; sourish fruity and toasty nose, traces of liquorice and chocolate underneath; moderate sourish-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; lingering sourish-fruity finish, some toasty traces included. Pleasant drink, not too demanding…
