Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or ‘riggwelted’ when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance.

Riggwelter has a wonderfully complex palate with hints of coffee, bananas and liquorice combining for a classic Golding hop finish.

Bottle from Morrisons. Clear amber/ruby body with a tight off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of toffee, rust and dried fruit. Flavour of Dr Pepper and salted caramel. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. It’s quite boozy but there’s lots of flavour.

dark ruby color, small head, that dissapeared very quickly. Aroma is vey malty, lots of caramel, and some faint hops. Flavour is very malty, and bready, with some grains. Nice bitter finish, not sure why this is an old ale, to me it’s more of a strong english bitter. The hops really come through in the finish.

Bottle 0,5ltr: Clear brown/ruby coloured ale with an fine roasted malts taste and hints of banana or maybe apple. And a good foamy head too, for English beer though.

(Bottle, 0.5l, from Alko, 20241122) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had earth, toasted malts, caramel and biscuits. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were toasted malts, earth, caramel and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A tasty malty brew.
