Dark Island reserve is a rich strong Orcadian Ale. After a gentle fermentation at our brewery, the beer is finished in old oak casks formerly used to mature fine scotch malt whisky. This unhurried process creates a timeless classic full of fruit, spice, oak and roast malt flavours.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye...4200th. Bottle is from 9/2008. Huge near black pour with a dark brown head. Aroma of leather, smoke, dark fruits, cinnamon, alcohol, chocolate, leather and peat. Raisins, dates. Flavors of ash, peat, marmalade, smoke, dark fruits, cola, currants, figs. Vinous. Lively bubbles. Smokey, somewhat thin. Tar and leather. Drinkable at the ABV. Rich but, not super exciting after this time. Good, but expensive beer.

Pours balck with a creamy dark tanhead. Aroma is very scotch? Rich aroma. Full bodied; very mild carbonation. Flavor is a bit cacao, a bit oak. A lot of dark roast malt. A lot of scotch aspect. Heat is mild. Really great beer. Incredibly smoother that Paradox.

15th July 2008. A smooth silky beer with a complex configuration of flavours. Whisky and bitter orange, very mild coffee and sweet cream. Vanilla. Different and very drinkable - looking forward to tasting this again after a couple of years.

Fuck me! A 2 year age intention turned into a 15 year forgot about this bottle in the back of the cellar! This 2007 bottling pours an opaque dark brown with a small tan head. Smooth and relatively light palate, reasonable fine carbonation. Nose is dark chocolate, oxidised malt and a little red wine vinegar. Tastes is similar until... letting it breathe a bit and with persistent gentle swirling agitation in the glass, the most strident oxidised flavours dissipate to a good extent, leaving behind a nice smooth sherry note that goes well with the creamy dark chocolate. Touches of coffee and sherry cask whiskey ripe fruits. Some chocolate biscuit on the light semi dry finish. Over aged for sure but partially retrievable and still a decent brew.

Bottle: Pitch-black, mid-sized firm tanned head with a light lace; tobacco, leather and smoke in the solid vinous-caramelly nose, accompanied by a faint bitterness; solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied and smooth; a delicate bitterness in the full soft sourish-vinous and roasty finish. Great, gorgeous stuff......

Bottled (swing top 75cl, Vasa session). Pitch black, small tan head. Aroma is suprisingly very lambic-like, quite tart. There is calvados, grapefruit, smoke and licorice. Full-bodied. Cellary and earthy, some vinegar, alcohol and tartness. Some licorice and oak barrel, but othwerwise feels like infected.

Bottled (thanks cgarvieuk!). Black colour, small brown head. Aroma is madeirawine, some grapes, alcohol and quite sourish. Flavour is smoked oak, alcohol, raisins, some sourness as well. Oily palate. Feels a bit infected, yet in a quite nice way.

750ml swingtop bottle bought for a relatively expensive price at Cornelius in Edinburgh. Vintage 2007, hand bottled 10.11.07. Thin, light brown head on top of a ruby-black body. Peaty aroma containing oak, dark coffee malt and a underlying note of liquorice. The flavour character appears as reminiscent of a dry, semi-sweet port wine. The vanilla oak works quite well together with figs and raisin. The concluding bitterness has got a smoky touch to it. Maybe rather too wine-like. I must admit that I had expected a little more, but, nonetheless, it is a fine drink for having a good time on late evenings (shared at Finns, Tromsø 18.02.2009).
