Dark Island is an iconic beer: The Orkney Brewery's flagship beer. Exhibiting a ripe fruity, chocolate nose, Dark Island is balanced by flavours of dark Chocolate, dried fruit, figs and nuts from the combination of roasted malts and rich hops. A standard-bearer for traditional Scottish ales.

Sampled @ GBBF. Dark brown color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, a slight sourness, roast. The sourness annoys me, shouldnβt be there I think. Average body and carbonation. Meh.

Scottish ale which, strictly speaking, falls under the old Scottish βexportβ (80/-) category. Light beige head, warm dark chestnut colour. Aroma of caramel malts, dried fruits and an obvious smokiness (peat?). Malty taste with dried fruits, candied dates, some coffee grounds, creamy mouthfeel, subtle smokiness, roasted bitter finish. Great Scottish ale.

Cask at archebald simpson Aberdeen. Opaque black / dark red coloured pour with a dense light tan head. Aroma is subdued dark malts with some roast and choc. Flavour is composed of milk choc with dishwater and roast barley. Lingering smooth roast and pepper. Palate is milky with a slightly creamy body. Fairly crude.

0,5L bottle. BB 05.15. Pours very dark ruby almost black with light tan head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is flowery sweet, dark chocolate and milk chocolate. Taste is roast, fruits, sour notes, and malt. Overall: nice brew, but I would prefer more body.

Very dark brown ale. Smoky aroma - almost that of a Rauchbier. Lighter taste than you would expect, very much in keeping with a mild. instead of an old ale. Liquorice predominates. Only letdown is in the palate, which throws a too-bitter curveball into an otherwise balanced mix.

04.11.19. Dark mahogany. Brown pale head and lacing. Aroma and taste of roasted malt, sour coffee and a hint of herbs. 20.05.14. Ebony. Short, beige head. Aroma of black malt, dark chocolate and slightly sour coffee. Well balanced taste, with decent bitterness in aftertaste. [6/4/7/5/13=3,5]
