Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.
As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

I expected a darker beer, and this one was not as complex as I was hoping for. Was in short supply when it came out, tried several bottles. I was wanting a dark or amber brew and this was definitely too light for me. More like La Maudite. Still a great brew though, but I wouldn’t say it aspires to greatness.

750 ml bottle from BevMo Salinas.Wonderful smelling nose of banana, candi sugar, toffee, and golden raisins. Hazy dark brown with a big, heavily lacing beige head. Flavor is raisins, sugary toffee, spiciness, and a hint of molasses. My favorite so far of their brews.

750ml corked bottle opened June 2009. Deep. opaque, amber brown color, with a substantial beige head. Lots of dark fruit flavors. Some spice as well, I want to say cinnamon, but it could just be the yeast. Raisin, cognac cherry, this is really deep and complex. The alcohol is pretty present, not unlike a Belgian Quad or Abt. Great.

Bottle as shown. Pours a dark cloudy amber large frothy light tan head that lasts awhile leaving behind good stick lacing. The aroma is a spicy fruit malt with raisin and caramel. Thin mouthfeel with brown sugar and yeast with a spicy finish. Hides the alcohol well, a very good belgian strong ale from Unibroue.

Very nice aroma, with thick complex, but subtle smell. The appearance is wonderful, beautiful colour, nice foam and a very beautiful bottle. The taste is complex, with many flavours but none as strong so it takes out another. Great beer!

Bottled@Fonefan (thanks for the bottle omhper!). Amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is alcohol, raisins, toffee, soap and some mild spices. Flavour is hops, spices, some alcohol as well as mild birch sap. Probably needs a bit of aging, since it felt a bit strong, sharpedged and alcoholic.
