Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout
Pitch black in color with a faint tan head that immediately identifies this beer as BIG. Aromas of dark fruits, chocolate, caramel and roast also make it even bigger. Roasted coffee and fruity chocolate notes are just the beginning of this stout's complex flavor. If this is wrong we don't want to be right.

Sample from a growler courtesy of a kind stranger at One Funky Afternoon at Jackie O’s on 04/02/2011: This brew pours a dark brown-black color with a very thin beige head that disappears quickly. Spots of lacing on the glass. Oaky bourbon aroma with some vanilla notes. Rich body with with a rich bourbon character that has wood and vanilla notes. Sweet malt in the background as well. The finish is somewhat boozy with a dark malty aftertaste. Good beer overall.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Deep opaque brown/black body, thin dark brown head. Nose of buttery oak and bourbon with charred, roasted malts and chocolate. Plummy, chocolaty body with roasted malts, dark fruit, grape, molasses, and roasted marshmallows, accentuated by firm, buttery oak and bourbon. Modest prickly alcohol heat. Complex, buoyant, and exquisite. One of the finest beers I have enjoyed this summer.

Sampled at the MiBGSF ’10. Poured black with a thick dark brown head that dissipated very slowly. Aroma had a beautiful bourbon note that melded beautifully with the dark chocolate, grains and coffee of Plead the 5th. Flavor was similar with bourbon in the start that mellows to let the dark chocolates, coffee and even a bit of vanilla/coconut come out in the finish. A fantastic beer!

I missed this at the Michigan Summer Beer Fest and I had to skip the RBSG trip here, so I’m thankful that the third time was a charm. Served on draft at the brewery. Pours a pitch black color with a small dark brown head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, roasted malts, caramel and coconut. The taste is big bourbon notes, wood, chocolate, maple, coffee, cherries, leafy bitter hops and a roastiness that is creeping in the background. Smooth, full bodied. A bit sweet, but still very nice.

On tap at MBGSF 2010; guess I’m the first one to get to enter a review. Pours a dark brown with a tan ring for a head. Aroma is bourbon primarily, with lots of brown sugar, dark fruits, and cocoa. Flavor is again bourbon-led with cocoa, brown sugar, and dark fruit. Very nice.
