The beer was born from a taste memory. A memory of a tour of Yorkshire in the 1970s, and of beers like Theakston’s Old Peculier. Black was developed with British brewmaster Ian Ward from the inspirational experiences of 30 years ago. With Ardennes spring water, Belgian malts, English hops, a slightly higher alcohol content, lightly carbonated and brewed the English way: the perfect example of a mixed marriage.

On tap at Brasserie de Bellevaux, Saturday 16th March 2019 en route to our new home in Attenkirchen, Bavaria via a stop off for the night in Heidelberg. Pours dark brown with a ruby glint when the light catches it. This is a decent beer and actually not so different from the Old Peculiar that it's trying to head towards. Malty with a very light roast a bitterness not unlike a UK bitter or porter. A touch of dark fruit, it's good.

From the bottle. Very dark brown with a tall and foamy head. Aroma of blackcurrant, chocolate and overdone toast. Taste is mildly bitter with herbal undertones, including tea and parsley. Body is to the light side of medium, carbonation moderate to prickly, at times a bit empty. Overall though decent stuff.
