After a long wait, our Special Reserve No.5 is pretty much ready. it’s an 8.4% big, bold, double IPA. It’s fresh, piney, big-bodied and with a bitterness that’ll slap you in the chops.

Taste is dull bitter orange peel, overly grainy, overly big on bitterness, bitter grains & low medicinal bitterness, orange peel, marmalade. Overly grainy, bitter harsh bitterness with little fruit character,... Grainy body, orange peel. Okay but hoped for more.

On keg at the Hanging Bat. Appearance - deep amber with a nice neat lacy head. Nose - marmalade and lime. Taste - vegetal note that’s washed away eventually by the return of the citrus. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - harder work than I expect from this style.
Earlier Rating: 3/5/2015 Total Score: 3.8
Bottle from Bon Vivant companion. Appearance - golden amber with a generous fluffy head. Nose - tangy orange going into marmalade. Taste - more marmalade. The finish is more lime. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - good example of the style. Rich but refreshing.
