This top-fermented dark beer is brewed with roasted malts. The secondary fermentation in the bottle gives it its powerful and pleasant character. Reddish-brown with a creamy and persistent head. The nose is quite complex, powerful and full-bodied with earthy notes of old wood. First aromas are powerful (alcohol), spicy (wood) yet always well balanced, leading up to a pleasantly caramelised finish. The round mouthfeel and roasted malty flavour reinforce the aromas of coffee and toffee (molasses and caramelised butter). Its dark colour and warm strength make Waterloo Double Dark a delicious beer!

This was one of the first speciality beer that I have tried back when I got interested in this sort of thing, and it was, for a long time, my favourite beer. Re-visiting it now, after about 700 new beers, I realise that, while it isn’t as good as I remembered, this is still a solid beer, all around. Very dark amber, almost opaque, with a bit of head. Caramel, citrus, in the nose, with a bit of lambic funkiness, and, believe it or not, notes of bourbon and some vanilla. The taste is quite well balanced, with notes of cocoa, vanilla, caramel and some alcohol. Medium body with a bitter-sweet (more sweet than bitter) after-taste.

Bottle (from SIP, Tallinn). Pours dark ruby with beige head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is sweet, malt, caramel, dark fruits. Flavor is sweet, some sourness, dark fruits, plums, dark sugar, malt. Alcohol is rather well covered. Overall: ok dark BSA, but has noticeable "macro feeling", which I don’t enjoy.

Clear deep dark brown colour, small frothy tan head, dissipates quickly, almost no lacing. Sweet malty aroma, roasted, dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol. Taste medium heavy sweet, light bitter, roasted, toffee, dark malts, sugary, alcohol. Medium body, oily to creamy texture, softcarbonation, aftertaste mild sweetbitter, roasted, light fruity notes, alcohol, quite one-dimensional.
