This top-fermented dark beer is brewed with roasted malts. The secondary fermentation in the bottle gives it its powerful and pleasant character. Reddish-brown with a creamy and persistent head.The nose is quite complex, powerful and full-bodied with earthy notes of old wood. First aromas are powerful (alcohol), spicy (wood) yet always well balanced, leading up to a pleasantly caramelised finish. The round mouthfeel and roasted malty flavour reinforce the aromas of coffee and toffee (molasses and caramelised butter). Its dark colour and warm strength make Waterloo Double Dark a delicious beer!

Pours very dark brown. Tan head. High aromas of cocoa, caramel, vanilla and a very particular smell of coriander. Powerful, sweet and creamy. Balanced, not very long.

Aroma has a very light hint of aniseed. Sweet dark malts in the flavour, light caramel too. Unfortunately there’s a harsh metallic aftertaste.

Clear copper, frothy offwhite head. Caramely aroma, dried fruit, yeast. Flavour has warming alcohol, sweetish dried fruit, raisins and yeasty notes.

Bottle. Pours nearly clear darkish copper brown with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of caramel malt, with notes of herbs and yeast and touches of hops. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt and fruit, complemented by bitter notes of hops and estery touches. Hints of roast. Bittersweet aftertaste. Lively carbonation. Decent, well-balanced but not mind-blowing.

’Massieve ale’ commemorating the Battle of Waterloo en served in stone jars. Yellowish white head, clear bronze colour (I insisted to taste this from a transparent recipient, obviously). Weakish aroma, caramel, walnuts, red berries, chocolate bars. Mild caramelly malt taste, subdued sweetness with candi-ish and honeyish sweetness, fruity, slick mouthfeel, chocolatey malts in the end with rather weak hops. A bit one-dimensional and lacking body for this style of ale.

Bottle. A reddish dark brown beer topped by a dense, light beige head. Dried fruits, dark sugars, cedar wood, raisins, some maltyness and a faint touch of alcohol. A bit sweet on the palate maybe, but it’s not sticky in any way. Dried fruits, caramel, dark sugars and raisins. Some bitterness too. Full body and a pleasant carbonation level. Lasting finish. Pretty nice this one, tasteful and Belgian in a wonderful way. Could be a bit more pronounced though. 140717
