9 December 2023. Vintage 2019 bottle from Deconinck - shared with Anke & Pieter!
Cloudy black, stable, very thin, beige head. Intense aroma of freshly baked brownie, black pepper, vanilla bean, cinnamon, clove, chocolate sauce, cappuccino, teriyaki, whisky, tobacco. Taste has sweet plum & brambleberry and sourish blackcurrant covered in thick malt layers of dark chocolate, brownie & pecan, elegantly complemented by spicy cinnamon & clove, underneath it all there's bitter espresso and an umami earthiness. Peppery hops in the finish, ongoing spicy notes and chocolate but eventually the chili starts burning, expressively but not in a dominant way, maintaining balance in the bittersweet profile, perhaps softened by the ageing too, together with warming whisky-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Complex and intense in all aspects, this is Pastry Stout on another level.

On tap at Capone’s in Norristown, PA. Jet black pour. Creamy tan cap. Roasted malt nose hints at cocoa and cinnamon. Flavor brings notes of bittersweet chocolate, cinnamon, treacle and vanilla. The ancho chilis don’t bring a lot of heat initially. The warmth comes more on the backend. Overall, it’s smooth and creamy on the palate and a very approachable for the style. Enjoyed this.

75cl bottle pours with a deep dark void of a colored body that supports a thin light mocha colored head of foam. The aroma invites with notes of chocolate and dark roasted malts bleeding into a sense of spiced dark coffee around the edges. The taste delivers smooth slick malt sweetened chocolate and then thin layers of a supple smooth chili pepper heat sensation peppered by a mild winter spiciness. To midway the malts and chocolate splinter away from the sweet vanilla creating an additional tasty facet to the experience. Great sipper. Thanks Petroff.
