Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground), malted barley, roasted malt, yeast and hops. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

550ml bottle from Blackers Hall farm shop, Wakefield. Black brown colour, beige foam head with lacing and aroma of bready roast malt, chocolate, dark fruits, raisins. Taste is roasted malt, bready, chocolate, dark fruit, smokey notes with some bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roasty bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.

Bottle (from Koht). Pours dark brown with light brown head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is dark chocolate, roast, malt. Flavor is sweet, dark chocolate, malt, roast, and some smokey notes. Overall: good, although it feels somewhat dead. Gets worse as it warms up.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BBE May 16, from Alko, 20150904) The beer poured clear and almost black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had chocolate, coffee and something metallic. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were chocolate, burnt malts, mild sourness, earth and bitterness. Aftertaste was toasted and bitter. The taste was a disappointment but the aroma was pleasant.

Completamente negra, gran espuma. Café y chocolate en el aroma. Muy bebible, con una gran cremosidad. Cuerpo moderado y baja carbonatación. Sabor a chocolate, miel y algo de higos. Excelente ejemplo de una buena porter.

35,5 cl bottle @ home, BBE 05/2016
Aroma is very English with licorice and toffee. Also mild coffee notes. Flavour has ash, licorice, English hops and cold coffee. A bit too much CO2 here. A bit disappointing – and too English for me.

355ml bottle from Alko. Pours black colored with a thick light brown head. Milk chocolate, toasted malt, licorice and oatmeal notes in aroma. Flavor has roasted malt, licorice, chocolate notes and hints of brown sugar. Finish is long with licorice lingering. I like the licorice notes here. Quite smooth mouthfeel. OK body for this ABV. Not bad.

Darkest brown. Tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, smoke, maple syrup, even a hint of kombu seaweed. Creamy, silky, balanced. Medium-long finish.
