Warming, malty and fruity. Pale and amber malts contribute to a mouth-filling and satisfying Horlicks and biscuity maltiness. Challenger and First Gold give a base note of herbal hop and Fuggles as a late hop contributes the main fragrant fruity and floral and spicy notes. Fermented slowly to give just enough fruity esters Abbot Ale provides a complex, satisfying and warming experience.

Cask at The Wharf. It pours a clear, amber colored body topped by a small, off-white head. The aroma is weak, nutty and bready with a slight sourness. Obviously not in top form. The flavor is nutty and with caramel, some hoppy bitterness too. Smooth on the palate, medium body. A rather boring one, but at least it goes down easily. 110417

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Clear, lovely auburn with a foamy, off-white head. Weak nose, some bready malts and sugar. Sweet flavor, some straight malts, sugar, booze, weak leafy bitters. Medium to full in body, warming with soft carbonation. Finishes sweet, semi-boozy, with cake malts. Not too bad.

Dull amber. Plasticy aroma and lots of caramel lameness. Palate is buttery, lightly caramelly, sweet - not much to recommend about this bog standard. Not a satisfying beer.

Cask at the Bird in Hand, Wordsley. Pours dark orange with a medium head. Aroma is faint, fruity malt. Some pithy orange to start with a fruity and orange low bitter finish.

[Cask at William Robert Loosley (JDW), High Wycombe] Deep amber, slight off-white head. Typical GK caramel overlaid with rich fruits (marmalade?) and a very mild dusty hop bitterness in the background. Very smooth, meaning that you inadvertently drink it dangerously fast! Definitely a pudding beer - itโs very sweet, and too much so by the end. I had a pint, and would have been happier with a half.

Cask at Ye Olde Cock Inn, Didsbury. Medium to dark amber color. Tall, fine head. Strong, fruity aroma, slightly sweet, like bubblegum. Fantastic. Smooth and mellow flavor. Fruity and spicy with good hops that are not overwhelming. Finish is full of hops and dry, but with a rich grain taste (oats?). Good medium plus body. Very nice, with full flavor.
