The first of the Mild's brewed by Burton Bridge Brewery, following on from the success of the XL Bitter, the brewery was asked for a darker beer

Adapting the recipe slightly with the inclusion of caramel to darken the beer and produce a smoother flavour, XL Mild proved an immediate favourite.

Cask at the Broomfield Tavern, Coventry on 26th October 2022. Rich dark brown with tan foam and scant lacing. Roasty, nutty malts aroma and liquid pass with just the hint of dark chocolate. Toasty malt finish. Very smooth mouthfeel and light body.

Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours a fairly dark reddish-brown with a small foamy cream head. Just some malts in the aroma. In the mouth it is light and rather watery. Flavour is strong but a bit odd. Malts, dark fruits and chocolate to commence with, plus later on liquorice and cream. Finish is rather dry. This is OK, but I’m not convinced about the overall flavour.

Draft at GBBF 2013, day 4 - London. Pours clear, dark brown with a bubbly tan head. The nose holds burnt toast, some wet carpet. Light sweet flavor with notes of brown bread, faint dry and burnt toffee, dirt. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Bland finish, with more dirt, brunt brown bread, a little bit more carpet, faint dried dark fruits. Meh, pretty mediocre.

Cask at the rising sun berko. Deep reddy brown coloured pour with a loose off white head. Aroma is spicy, cake. Tart apple, nutty malts, some solvent. Flavour is composed of harsh dish watery grains. Cake, spices, solvent. Hot. Palate us semi sweet, wishy washy, alcohol in the finish. Not good.

Cask in the Black Eagle, Hockley, Birmingham. Mid to dark purplish cola brown, translucent. Decent creamy head to remind me that I’m getting up north. Smells sulphurous with chocolate malt & some vinegar notes, perhaps this batch has seen better days. Tastes ok though, slight bittersweet with a chocolatey hint becoming more assertively bitter in the finish. Light body as you’d expect from a mild. Decent.
