Mikkel and Brian are two of the world’s most unconventional brewers. By designing beers at various breweries around the globe, they have found the freedom to experiment and innovate, resulting in unique beers that often blur the lines of definition. After having met at a festival in Bodegraven, NL the two realized that their first creations both were called Stateside. It was then an obvious decision to make the two recipes into a new product, packed full of piney, resinous hops, and backed by the esters of a farmhouse yeast strain.

(Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 17 July 2011) Golden amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, spicy nose with notes of dried apricots, orange peel, grass and spicy hints of wild yeast. Spicy, malty taste with dried apricots, orange peel, hints of wild yeast and a grassy, spicy bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, slightly sweetish. Very nice beer.

At ACBF 2011. Hazy orange/gold with thin off white head. Bit of banana fruit salad. It’s a decent dry subtle citrus fruit beer. Some esters. Easy drinking.

Draught@CPH BF 2011. Orangeish golden colour with a small head. Aroma is fruits, caramel, some sour wood as well as mild farmyardy notes. Flavour is quite much the same with the fruity and floral notes being a bit stronger than in the aroma.

Huge, dense yellowish head over well-carbonated, light-amber beer. Aromatic, grapey hops’ nose; bit of caramel seeping through, followed by green leaves (poplar) and spices. (Root)spicy, yeasty flavours, barnyard associations, with a hopbitter aroma. Hops are less obvious C-hops than the nose suggested, but resinous indeed. Orange zeste, and chamomille retronasal. Medium bodied, oily slickness backthroat, reasonable balance. Good beer, but whereas I understand the drive to marry IPA-characteristics with Saison profile, I’m way less than 100% convinced they pulled it off, here.

Sampled on tap @ Copenhagen Beer Festival 2011: Pours a semi hazy orange body with a creamy nice lasting just off-white head. Aroma is wheaty with coriander, citrus, some yeast and ripe watermelon-zest. Average carbonated and medium-bodied. Somewhat sweet flavors, more of that ripe watermelon-zest, little banana, citrusy lemon, some quite noticeable alcohol in there and the whole thing ends on a really peppery and spicy both finish and aftertaste. Good brew but a tad to raw and wild yet perhaps.
