Ridgeway FES matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal liquorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the aging process. Beneath all this change, sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hops.

500ml bottle. Ruby red glowing, darkest brown colour with small to average, creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Roasty dark malty aroma, a touch of liquorice and dark chocolate. Taste is roasty dark malty with some underlying sweetness, a touch of caramel and dark chocolate, fruity hints of raisin.

Opaque dark brown beer with a tidy pale tan head. Palate is smooth with light minerally carbonation. Smooth dark malts, no roast or bitterness but there is nice dark chocolate and decent dark malt cream. Whisper of smooth coffee. Light smooth finish. Decent stout this, smooth and very drinkable.

Deep brown with red hints...short, dark tan head. Aroma is light....sweet smoke, raisin, light chocolate. Taste is soft, cream, chocolate, roast. Very gentle...sweet, but not overly so. A touch of licorice, malty. Not terribly "stout"....but quite a nice drinking beer.

500 ml bottle sampled in 2008. Dark reddish amber body with a creamy beige head. Slightly roasted aroma with coffee and dry fruit. Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, mocha, fruity and balanced bitter. Full body and a nice aftertaste. Pleasant and harmonic stout.

Bottle: Deep ruby-amber coloured, small and stable off-white foamy layer, almost solid roasty-chocolatey nose with a port-vinous touch; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied; cacao-powder and dark malt in the slightly drier bitter-sweet and vinous finish. Good, but not completely convincing...

50 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 31.03.2009
Aroma has licorice, chocolate, some English hops, toffee and hints of hay. Flavour is sweetish with somewhat salty licorice, toffee, some coffee and distant herbal notes. Good.
