Our first ever recipe in 2001, Highlander's ability to stand the test of time is testament to its quality. Proudly traditional, Highlander is the punchy, bittersweet amber ale that Fyne Ales was built on. A nutty, caramel-malt body with sweet red fruit notes and a gently bitter finish.

(Cask at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico, London, 29 May 2022) Amber colour with frothy, tan head. Malty, hoppy nose with caramel, dried apricots, orange peel and slightly earthy hops. Malty taste with notes of caramel, dried apricots, toast and a balanced earthy bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Solid and well made bitter. Nice one.

On cask at Fyne Ales, pours a clear copper with a tiny head. Nose brings out toasted caramel and bready malt. Flavour is fairly subtle, with bready malt and a hint of caramel. Weak and watery but there's nothing wrong with it.

Creamy off white head stayed on a vivid amber coloured body. Fruity & malt aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & tingly on the back. Spiced berries, raisin, malt & toffee tastes with a tangy bitter finish. Good one.

Clear golden amber. Dense and persistent white head and lacing. Excellent aroma and taste of pale crystal malt, pale malt, dried berried, succade and meadowy hops. Lingering and enjoyable aftertaste. Very quaffable. From cask at The Dog & Bell, Deptford, London, at Burn’s Night with haggis, neeps, tatties and Scottish folk music.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a hazy golden brown with am edium off-white head and good lacing. The nose contains malts and honey. In the mouth it has a sweet creamy texture but with an underlying bitterness. There’s caramel, nuts and dried fruit there as well. Finish is bitter sweet I would call it a Scottish Ale / 80/- / Export rather than a bitter. A nice solid full bodied beer anyway.

Just hints of smoke make this one a good one.

Dark blond colour with fluffy head. Aroma and flavour are malty and toasty with the toastiness bringing in a hint of coffee beans.
