In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brewmaster’s interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.
Admin's Note: This entry is for non oak-chip aged batches of Damnation. Previously batches 23, 46 and 69 were aged on oak chips and should be rated under the separate entry.

375ml capped and corked bottle courtesy of Levi. Not sure how I haven’t rated this one before. Hazy orange-tan. Minimal, oily residue head. Tastes sort of old and devolved. Really unimpressive at this point, not the beer I associated with in my brain. A pretty mundane Belgian Blonde, a hint of funk in the background. Batch 57 drank in 2013. I’d say don’t age this one.

On tap at Toronado, August 2013. Clear golden yellow with a medium white head. Aroma and taste of dried fruit, spices, yeast and a lot of malt. Rather light but still smart. A tasty Belgian Strong Ale.

Batch 63 Fairly fruity aroma with some apple and pear. Only faint spiciness. Only light graininess. A touch of citrus but mostly pear and apple. Pours a surprisingly clear golden yellow with a fairly thin but persistent head that is replenished as quickly as it recedes. Light lacing with faint legs. Flavor is also fairly fruity but with more of a citrus character though the pear and apple is still very prevalent. Light graininess but the fruit is the most prevalent character. Light bitterness and fairly dry. Some clove and coriander in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall an alright beer but I am not sure the age really helped this one. There isn’t much citrus or spice and the fruit has turned very pear and apple like. The malt character is also faded and lacking the crispness of a nice golden ale. A little better as the yeast gets roused into the beer.

On tap at Toronado. An almost clear one, golden in color and with a small, white head. Sweet, fruity and lightly spiced aroma with a touch of pale malts. Nice bitterness in the flavor, dealing with the sweetness. Quite dry actually. Full body, soft carbonation. A tad sweet in the finish, else it’s a nice beer. 130804

Commonshawn has pretty much nailed this review for me! Belgian yeast, some lagery notes in amongst the mild spices. Okay, but not as good as I expected.
