Congratulations to Brian Pramov & Bryan Keas of Denver, CO, for winning our Batch #1000 homebrew competition! Their intensely hoppy, dark rye ale caught the judges’ attention and was the unanimous choice for best in show.
Bryeian is the winner of our Batch #1000 homebrew contest! Hard to believe that we've brewed 1,000+ batches of beer and for those who have been with us throughout the years, probably surprising to see that the winner is a hoppy ale! A cascadian, dark rye ale to be exact.
Brian Pramov and Bryan Keas, a pair of homebrewers from Denver put together this winning recipe for us and it shined brightly in our competition. The roast of the dark malts, the spice of the rye and the intense hop character combine for a fantastic experience.

Bottle @ Ungstrup. Pours a dark brown black color with a longlasting tan head. Has a fruity malty weak piney hoppy caramel and rye aroma. Slightly roasted malty hoppy bitter rye flavor. Has a roasted malty hoppy bitter rye finish with hints of caramel.

750ml bottle pours an opaque brown with a ton of frothy, slate grey head. Nose is very vegetal, green bell pepper, herbs, some bread, some candy sugar, a little wood, spice. Flavor is incredibly tannic, like a glass of iced tea with 42 tea bags in it, spice, chai, pepper, grainy, malt. Super tannic finish. A lot happening, but the tannins make this very hard to drink.

Bottled. A black beer with a an head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, roasted malt, wood, and a bit of brett. The flavor is sweet with notes of hops, roasted malt, soy sauce, hops, and alcohol, leading to a bitter finish.

75 cl bottle. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity and toasted malty. Toaated malty and light fruity, smooth fruity and lingering hoppy. Crisp hoppy and light citrusy. Smooth and roasted. Bitter and roasted finish

Bottle from CraftShack Pours a fairly dark brown with a huge creamy tan head that that sticks to everything, glass, mustache, etc. Aromas of pine, resin and spice with hints of green onion and citrus. Bready caramel and light roasted grain round out the nose. Bitter resinous spice and pine flavor dominates with a fairly high level of bitterness. Mild caramel, bread, and chocolate provide hints of balance, but this one skews heavy to the hop. Medium to light body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a slick ashy resinous mouthfeel. Nice Black IPA I really enjoyed this.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 10/24/2013: Pours black as pitch with a medium thick tan head that diminishes gradually. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of rye bread, chocolate and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of spicy rye, grainy malt , dark chocolate and hops. The finish is malty up front with a rye and earthy hops aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Pitch black. Completely creamy and sticky 2 finger brown head. Nose is piney and toasty. Taste is pine cone, malted barley and some coffee. There’s gingerbread and the rye is sweet.

750 ml Reserve Society bottle. Pitch black color with huge head retention that laces until the end. Nose is really delightful. Rye bread, roasted malts and hints of chocolate. The rye is really forward. Dank pine cone hops, chocolate hints with maybe a hint of licorice (hard to say with the rye spicy hints) The carbonation gives a lively pop. Brian & Bryan really have a nice beer here. Really easy to drink and overall very nicely put together.
