Congratulations to Brian Pramov & Bryan Keas of Denver, CO, for winning our Batch #1000 homebrew competition! Their intensely hoppy, dark rye ale caught the judges’ attention and was the unanimous choice for best in show.
Bryeian is the winner of our Batch #1000 homebrew contest! Hard to believe that we've brewed 1,000+ batches of beer and for those who have been with us throughout the years, probably surprising to see that the winner is a hoppy ale! A cascadian, dark rye ale to be exact.
Brian Pramov and Bryan Keas, a pair of homebrewers from Denver put together this winning recipe for us and it shined brightly in our competition. The roast of the dark malts, the spice of the rye and the intense hop character combine for a fantastic experience.

Bottle. Pours deep clear black with a large creamy brown head that dissipates quite slowly leaving really nice lacing. Aroma is citrus and pine with some roasty notes underneath. Flavor is about the same, light sweet and light bitter, some roastiness but really hop forward. Not getting a lot rye, but perhaps some spiciness in the finish. Medium body. Only question: how the hell is this not a black IPA?

Bottle. Blackish beer with a big brown head. Grapefruit and pine aroma. Grapefruit and pine flavor with light caramel and light dark malts. Medium bodied. Grapefruit and light pine linger with caramel and light dark malts.

Aroma is fairly hop forward with tons of pine resin hop character. Light rye spice and dark malt, but the aroma is definitely dominated by hops. Pours dark brown but not quite black with a big, thick dark tan head that has fairly good retention. Moderately high lacing and medium legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet and malt forward. Light roast with some toasted bread notes and rye spice. Moderate bitterness with medium pine notes mid palate. Lingering low bitterness, medium pine resin and some light sweet, rye spice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Very low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a surprisingly nice dark rye IPA. The use of a very pine forward hop works well with the dark malt and rye spice. A touch sticky sweet but balanced malt character.

Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours black with a large creamy tan head. Aroma is hoppy and spicy. Med + body. Rye is strong, spicy. Followed by earthy/resin/fruit hop in large amount. Goes to smooth malt and chocolate, but rye is ever present. Quite delicious.

Pours clear brown with a light tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, coffee, citrus, rye and grass. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long roasted, coffee and caramel finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the taproom. It’s a dark brown beer, looks hazy, and with a small beige head. Light roasted aroma with some licorice and lots of pine cones. Wonderful blend of licorice, roasted malts, pine cones and bitterness in the flavor. Full body, quite dry. Lasting finish. This is how a black IPA should be. 130811
