On tap @ Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours a dark brown, almost amber, with a thick creamy head. Aroma Is roasted malts, with oak and earthy notes, as well as fruity port winey whiffs and quite a lot of bittering lemon peel hops. Full, creamy body with medium carbonation. Flavour is quite bitter with citrusy hops and pine, as well as sweet roasted malts with succade and molasses giving it an oaky finish with lots of earthy notes.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Hazy dark brown colour, moderate off-white head. Distinct aroma of oak / red wine barrel, a hint of fusel alcohols. Also notes of dark dried fruits. The flavour is very oaky, the red wine barrel does indeed dominate. Decent hops in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. Very tasty and interesting!

Bottle. Pours a near clear deep amber with no head whatsoever. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grain and caramel with a bit of booze and an underlying light fruit notes with an odd red wine note. Flavor is similar with sweet caramel and sweet grains that kind of clash with the red wine and boozy note.

Bottle at home. Pours a pretty clear brown amber colour with a big frothy beige head. Incredibly rich and malty aroma with lots of oak, sweet malt, marzipan, fudge, syrup, caramel and some alcohol. Not far from a cognac. The flavour follows up with a complex mixture of the aroma with licorice, spices and a touch of roast in the end. Very rich and sticky mouthfeel, and a light to medium bitterness. A rich barley wine with a complex aroma and flavour. Almost like a journay.

375 ml. bottle, bottled a year ago. Poured in to a snifter. Dark amber colour with a reddish hue. Thin, tan head. A vinous aroma mixed with a heavy caramel malts. The red wine barrels really shines through: Red berries, oak, vanilla, and dark, dried fruits. A good hops presence, resin and floral. Taste is sweet. Full body, oily feel and a soft carbonation. Long lasting bitter finish with that excellent red wine barrel touch. A slight hint of alcohol. Excellent, this beer shows the perspective of barrel aging.

Cloudy dark red beer with a big pale tan fluffy head. Light palate, smooth and a little dry. Low carbonation. Light malt with traces of cream and barrel induced vanilla. Nice touch of red wine, not dominant but with good red berry fruits. Finishes smooth and semi dry. Very nice BA beer that belies it’s strength.
