Bottle: Poured a deep dirty cloudy brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of heavy residual sugars with some dry grainy notes is quite intense. Taste is also dominated by heavy amounts of residual sugars with some dry grainy malt of wheat. Body is full with limited filtration and medium carbonation with light warming alcohol notes. A bit intense to drink in large quantities but interesting nonetheless.

Tap at The Grove, Huddersfield. Dark amber. Off white, thin head. Dark cherries and caramel dominate. Alcohol is warming but not intrusive. An ideal festive beer, perhaps? I could have got carried away with this. Fortunately, common sense prevailed!

A barley wine with wheat? Oddly enough, it does taste like that. A strong, sweet beer with the soft tones of wheat. Really nice, good that someone thought about this combination.

Vintage bottle received in trade from MeadMe, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a slightly hazy deep copper color with a smallish khaki head that persists for a while before leaving some lace on the sides. Aroma is sweet with bready, honey sweet, sugary malt. Lots of caramel and brown sugar, sweet orange and a bit of spice and earthy hop aroma. Surprisingly little alcohol aroma for a beer at almost 11%. The flavor is sweet and malty up front with a ton of brown sugary caramel. The alcohol shows itself in the flavor and provides a whole lot of warming on the way down. Deep orange and light sweet fruity flavors along with a hint of spice and earthy hop round out the flavor nicely. Very faint sherry like oxidation but not nearly as present as the oatgoop last night. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. This one’s holding up fairly well, I enjoyed the hell out of it, like an old Barleywine at Mike’s house in Feb.

Bottle at Bruce’s, thanks to jackl. It pours deep reddish-brown with a medium beige head. The nose is pine, light resin, sherbet, citrus peel, orange and caramel. The taste is wood, resin, leaf, brown bread, toast, spice, earth, alcohol warmth, berry and dull citrus with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Flavoursome, well balanced and rather tasty. Good stuff.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s during night one of Jack’s Farewell Tour in London - big thanks to Jack for this retiree. Pours clear ruby with a tight, creamy yellow-tan head. Nose holds some pine, drying ripe berries, a bit of bread. Big sweet flavor with lots of boozy kick, bitter pine, dry dirt, dry berries, dry toast. Full bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Warm finish, bitter earth and pine, bready malts, berries, burnt caramel. Nice barley wine.

Sample from tap, CBF 2013. 9,5 % alc. Hazy, dark amber colour with dense, off-white head. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, wheat, ripe berries, plums, yeasts, citrus and flower hops. A hint of alcohol. Taste is sweet. Medium to full body, thicker texture. Finishes light dry with a herbal note, alcohol, rich malts and citrus fruits. Quite nice.
