American IPA brewed exclusively with Simcoe hops
All hail the Simcoe hops, featured exclusively in ControversiAle for an earthy and pine laced aroma combined with zesty grapefruit and hop marmalade that goes down easy like a pale ale but with the depth and complexity of an American IPA with multiple hop additions. As for the name? Well, let’s just say this beer has a history.

’Hanging Frank’ bottle. Hazy amber beer, huge frothy white head. Semi soft dry palate. Head is a little sherbetty. Sharp limey hops, tangy. Trace of lemon. Some softer orange underneath accompanied by pine. Dry minerally finish. Nice!

Sample at Kris’ Picks Beer Tasting at Hills Market on 07/19/12: Clear amber-orange color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Light-bodied with a zesty citrus character and notes of hops and sweet malt. The finish is crisp and fruity with a grapefruity hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

12oz bottle pours clear copper with thin white head. The mild aroma offers up citrus grapefruit and under ripe orange peel bittering notes along with faint malt sweetness. The taste has a pretty decent amount of hops that lean in the direction of bitterness with only a smattering of flavor hops and a dash of sweet maltiness. Like in the nose I get grapefruit, pithy orange peel bitterness and just enough sweetness to notice. Nice bitter IPA.

Draft. Another nice Michigan IPA, but the only thing that distinguishes it from the pack is the taste of a fresh meadow. That can be good or bad, but it worked with the meal I was eating and the mood I was in.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 2/27/2012. Pours hazy golden amber color with a dense 1-2 finger off white head with good retention that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big orange, pineapple, mango, pine, herbal, floral, honey, caramel, and light biscuit. Very nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, pine, orange, floral, caramel, honey, biscuit, and herbal spiciness. Nice amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pine, citrus, caramel, biscuit, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a bit. Great balance of flavors with bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy and very smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden at 5.5% with only a slight warming well after the finish. Very smooth and easy to drink as well. Overall this is an excellent IPA that actually fits more into the pale ale category. Excellent fruity hoppiness; with great balance and very smooth drinking.

Hazy amber tinted orange and rusty bronze coloured body with a thin, fast-dying off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, concord grapes, citrus, hops, alcohol, dry oak and a bit of caramel. Medium-bodied; BIting piney and grapefruit hops with a lot of resin and pungency up front. Aftertaste is more complex with a nuts, oak, grass and even some light spices coming in the mix. Overall, a nice and complex IPA that starts out very hoppy at first, but is left balanced and complex near the end - a great beer for the style. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 28-April-2011 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 13-August-2011.

Bottle. Pours a dingy and darkish amber with a massive pillowy head and aromas that are heavy with citrus (grapefruit and lemon), a little bit of something sweet (brown sugar/caramel) and a little soap. Flavor explodes into a burst of soapy grapefruit with enough malt sweetness to keep things from getting out of control. This is well balanced and light on the palate.
