American IPA brewed exclusively with Simcoe hops
All hail the Simcoe hops, featured exclusively in ControversiAle for an earthy and pine laced aroma combined with zesty grapefruit and hop marmalade that goes down easy like a pale ale but with the depth and complexity of an American IPA with multiple hop additions. As for the name? Well, let’s just say this beer has a history.

4oz pour at Churchkey. Pours a hazy, dark gold with a thin, wispy white head. Nose of zesty hops, grapefruit, pine, limes. Flavor is easy on the malt which allows the amarillo to come through, grapefruit, light lemon, some light cracker and light biscuit. Full bodied, dry, bitter finish.

At Short’s Brewing Monster Tap Takeover at Churchkey. Poured a dark golden color with very little head. Aroma was pine hops, caramel malts. Flavor was incredibly tasty.

12 oz bottle. Pours orange gold with a white head. Great spicy, citrus, and floral hop aroma. Flavor leans more toward grassy and herbal flavors, though the spice and citrus are still certainly there. Light bitterness and medium palate. Pretty nice.

Pours clear deep gold into a Sam glass. Off-white conglomerate head with excellent retetention recedes leaving spider lacing to coat surface. Serious weed aromas. Thin with upfront sweet caramel turning to deep resin before a slight biscuit turn in the lasting resin finish. Aroma wins...

Light amber color. Huge huge grapefruit nose with nothing else, but grapefruit. If my eyes were closed it would smell like pink grapefruit. Just massive grapefruits everywhere, but that is it. Highly carbonated. Freshly squeezed grapefruits into soda water. Dry finish.

Bottle thanks to Secret Santa. Pours with a hazy golden yellow body with an off-white head. Aromas of citrus, papaya, orange, nuts and grain. Slightly husky and fruity. Flavors of papaya, roasted grain, raw pineapple, tons of esters (yeast), and lots of fruit. Something is off about the grain bill or the fermentation. I think there are some tannic components but it is hard to tell amongst the hops. Lingering acrid note. Still drinkable but something is off (as it seems with more than a few bottled Shorts beers). Dry, lightly acidic maybe, medium carbonation. Something is off.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small gray head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a note of wood as well as lots of grapefruit and a hint of less aggressive citrus underlying. Flavor is also strong in bitter grapefruit with a slight backing sweet grain.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. A hazy red-orange pale ale with a resinous, floral, citrusy nose and a rich body with berries, sugared toast, and big, potent, piney, floral hops. Long, bitter, somewhat astringent finish. A pretty big beer for something without the word "imperial" in the title.
