This spicy, rich and unique beer is bursting with chocolate and coffee malt flavours.
We’re famous for our pale and gold coloured beers at Oakham Ales, but we brew some great black beers as well and Hawse Buckler showcases just what our brewers can do in that area. Hawse Buckler (first brewed in 2006) was an excellent Black IPA a long time before the Black IPA category was even invented! Our brewers have been perfecting the recipe ever since.

500ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium, frothy head. Aroma is mild piney hops with a little Bovril. Taste has Dai.t, dry roast to start, with a piney, bitter hop finish.

Bottle 500ml. @ home.Clear dark brown colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, moderate hoppy, raisin - dark dried fruit. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, salty, chocolate, licorice, hoppy, dry, soft salt licorice. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120628]

50cl bottle. Pours dark opaque with a fawn head. The nose is like a fruit ’n’ nut bar - raisins, milk chocolate and just a hint of nuts.More chocolates and raisins on the taste. The palate is medium to full bodied, creamy textured and a reasonably clean finish - not perfect, but fairly clean. Slightly more alcohol than preferred but good beer.

Opaque black beer with a relatively smooth palate leading to dry. Taste is bitterish roasted malt and fruity bitter hop. Nothing else here to balance these extreme flavours. Lacks deftness and cohesion.

Bottled at RBESG 2008. A red-brown beer with a thick brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of sweet malt and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt as well as medium notes of sweet malt and soy sauce, leading to a very bitter finish.

Cask @ Market Porter, Borough SE1. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty hoppy aroma with some hints of chocolate. Roasted malty licorice and chocoalte flavor with some hoppy hints. Has a roasted malty licorice finish with some hoppy hints in the aftertaste.

Huge dark tan head over near black beer with some ruby reflections. Very fresh-hoppy smell, c-hops like; dry hop bales, but preciously little else. The same, or even more hop-toned taste, but now with bitter chocolate, going over in tobacco ash and black coffee in the finish. VERY dry. Bit burning MF, especially backthroat; rather well-bodied, creamy texture. Very nice beer, worth many much stronger ones. Big thanks to Darren!
