This spicy, rich and unique beer is bursting with chocolate and coffee malt flavours. We’re famous for our pale and gold coloured beers at Oakham Ales, but we brew some great black beers as well and Hawse Buckler showcases just what our brewers can do in that area. Hawse Buckler (first brewed in 2006) was an excellent Black IPA a long time before the Black IPA category was even invented! Our brewers have been perfecting the recipe ever since. Colour: Black Hops: Amarillo, Chinook, Simcoe (all USA) Malts: Maris Otter, Wheat Malt, Crystal Malt, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley Allergens: Contains Gluten

Bottle at my 5K taste-a-thon, thanks to Leighton. It pours near black with a medium tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, earth, juicy fruit, jam and dark chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, toast, earth, mild acidity, decent bitterness and ash with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Tasty and rather well-rounded. Rather nice!

Bottle split at Scopey’s 5K Extravaganza of Oompah Band meets doorbell music, thanks to the guy who lives up the stairs, all those bloody stairs ... - 15/02/14. Light black with a moderate tan covering that dissipates to edgework. Nose is roast malt, earthy, dark toffee, dark fruit twang, ashy tobacco notes. Taste comprises earthy cocoa, dirt, leather, tobacco, dark fruits. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, drying curtain call. Decent drop.

Black ale, no head and complex. Has an initial potent fruity hoppy aroma but an underlying malty sweetness behind that. Roasted malts are evident in its flavour but its aftertaste certainly smacks of coffee. Very enjoyable.

Aroma: Coffee, roasted malt and light smokiness. Very hoppy.

Appearance: Jet black body with a medium tan head that slowly fades. Excellent lacing.

Taste: Strong flavours of grapefruit, chocolate, cherry and dark malts. Very tangy and hoppy.

Palate: Medium body with an oily texture. Lively carbonation.

Overall: Tasty and complex. The hoppiest stout I’ve tasted - it’s almost a Black IPA.
