This spicy, rich and unique beer is bursting with chocolate and coffee malt flavours.
We’re famous for our pale and gold coloured beers at Oakham Ales, but we brew some great black beers as well and Hawse Buckler showcases just what our brewers can do in that area. Hawse Buckler (first brewed in 2006) was an excellent Black IPA a long time before the Black IPA category was even invented! Our brewers have been perfecting the recipe ever since.

Cask @ Edward Wylie JDW. Very dark brown, thin beige head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee and drief fruits. Flavour is roasted malts, coffee, slight smokyness, dark fruits, a very sight sourness. Very tasty.

(Cask at Craft Beer Co Covent Garden, London, 26 Apr 2015) Black colour with foamy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of liquorice, coffee and pine needles. Malty, roasted taste with black coffee, cacao, liquorice, a touch of mint and a generous piney, coffee bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Tasty and solid stout with a fresh bitterness. Very nice.

Black beer with a thick, bubbly brownish head. Smells mostly of malt but I think there’s a hint of something fruity, almost citrus, under that too. That’s there in the flavour too but it’s mostly toasted malt and a dry, hoppy aftertaste. Unusual but very nice.

On tap at the West End Tap, Lincoln. Deep dark almost black colour with a thick tan head. Roasted malt aroma. The taste is also roasted malt with a slight bitterness.

Cask at St Albans beer festival 2014, St Albans, Herts. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, coffee, bitter.

Cask gravity at the St Albans beer fest 2014. Dark chestnut brown coloured pout with a lasting light cream head. Aroma is honey, caramel, hint of choc, hay earthyness. Flavour is semi sweet, caramel, nutty honey and semi spicy hop. Palate is semi sweet and good cask condition. Very tasty beer.

Cask at the Lower Red Lion, St Albans. Dark, almost opaque purple-black. Aroma of prunes, charcoal, lavender, dark chocolate. Usual stout aroma components, but there’s something a bit more complex about it: a sweet-umami aspect which I can’t quite place. Taste is fairly bitter with a slightly vinegary aftertaste. Quite good overall. I’d jump at the chance to have this again.

Cask at Thomson’s. Pours black with a thick white head. Aromas are roast malt, light coffee, dark fruits. Taste is more of the same, sweet finish. Good.

On tap at Craft Beer Co Covent Gardens, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out light coffee, toasted malt, and a little cocoa. Flavour brings out coffee grinds, dry cocoa and roast. The coffee is most dominant, with a light and easily drinking palate. Very good stuff.
