Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.

This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

hazy brown colour, huge, dense off-white head; aroma of floral honey, walnut, dried plum and cherry, and some liqueur; taste is the same; great ale!

330ml bottle poured in Bierhuis de Klomp, Delft - Red ruby body, little in the way of head. Nose is very herb-forward, with subtle notes of fruit and dark chocolate. Liquorice also comes into the taste, a bit bitter, some sour raisin at the back end. Odd aftertaste, but very warming.

Bottle from Biervana. Amber color with creamy tan head. Aroma is honey, anise, caramel, raisins, chocolate, also blackcurrant. Taste is spicy anise and rosemary, spruce, toffee, chocolate, blackcurrant, and a herbal-earthy bittersweet finish. Low carbonation, full-bodied. A fine traditional brew!

Interesante.

Bottle. Murky brown with a beige head that fades. Cheerful aroma of spiced apples and brown sugar - ginger, mace, cardamon, white pepper. A lot more grunt and depth to the taste though, with darker sugars, raisins, dates and strong bread as well. Not surprisingly a bit medicinal at the end. No overt alcohol but drinks like a strong beer. Satisfying.
