Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 25 JUN 2017, at Rotterdam) The beer ruby red and hazy. Its head was small and white. Aroma had berries, caramel and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were berries, spices, caramel and low bitterness. Aftertaste had berries and sweetness. A good and rather different brew.

Hazy copper/brown with minimal yellow-brown head. Aroma is caramel, clove, phenols, some berries, maybe rubber. Taste is intense brown sugar sweetness, roast bitterness, more complex than this sounds. A hint of peppers while swallowing with more roast and chocolate to follow. Good!

Sample from bottle, CBWF 2016. Muddy, amber colour with a thin, off-white head. Sweet, spiced aroma with herbal notes, grains, fruits, citrus, caramel malts, peppers and sage. Taste is light sweet. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes slightly dry with herbal notes. Strange, yet enjoyable.

330ml Bottle - Hazy brown with some red tinges. Raisins, berries, leather and some vinous notes in the aroma. Fruity and rich taste with raisins, brown sugar, leather, nutmeg and blackcurrant.

Bottle at home, 30/07/16. Bought from Saviere Biers. Extremely sweet aroma, unlike a beer. More like dadelion and burdock (spelling) or such like. Murky dark toffee in appearance. Small amount of off-white head. Smooth, medium bodied. The spices come through, a hint of a burning sensation on the tongue. Sweet with an underlying bitterness. Medicine. Tastes like a alcoholic soft drink. Overall I am enjoying it.

Bottle, courtesy of SinH4. Spicy and strong, almost like a liquor. Fruity, sweet, dark and dried fruit. A bit boozy, thick, heavy. Warming like a barley wine. Not sure I dig this combination, but it could just be me.
