Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

Pours a slightly hazy (thanks to the sediments) coppery color, topped with a decent beige colored head. Mild aroam of herbal hops, some spices aslo present with some soury and soapy notes as well. Taste is sweet and biscuity, no real bitterness. Surprisingly creamy and hides alcohol very well. Nice one actually.

Murky brown, creamy beige head. Aroma has malt, hints of dried fruit and booze. Caramely flavour, dark sugar, slightly spicy and herbal. Creamy mouthfeel and sweetish, light bitter finish.

0,33L bottle (from Drink Shop as Koyt Gruitbier), BB 14.10.2016. Pours very dark ruby with light brown head. The head stays. Aroma is sweet, caramel, malt. Flavor is sweet, caramel, malt, metallic. Alcohol is well covered. Overall: simple, but very nice brew.

’Koyt’ is an old Dutch name for ’gruitbier’ and etymologically the same as "keyte", the name Strubbe uses for a few of its beers as well. This one was brewed in Belgium some years ago and revives that mediëval tradition, allegedly not hopped though I find that hard to believe, bronze-coloured beer with complex sweetness, spice accents and bitterish finish.

300ml bottle at Old Nickel. Unclear, brown coloured body, fair tan-coloured head. Spotty lacing. Sweet fruity nose joined by herbs and spices. Flavoured with plums, raisin, dough and caramel. Herbal hops to the ending with integrated alcohol. Fine bodied. Nice (Amsterdam 21.07.2014).
