Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.

This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

Sweet fruity nose with dark fruits, cherries, berries, bit caramel, dough, and a lot of different spices: clove, ginger, cinnamon, anise. Opaque redbrown, foamy tan head, good lacing. Fresh sweet(bitter), fruity candy flavour, medium to heavy body. Fruity sweetness continues in finish with the spices coming back on the tongue. Never (artificial) sugary sweet but always fruity, very special indeed.

First rating: Medium beige head. Hazy deep dark red, barely translucent, body with lots of visible particles. Fruity licorice and herbs aroma with cinnamon and cardamom notes. Dry-sweet toffee and vanilla fudge taste with roasty fruity notes. Full-bodied. Sharpish, slightly hot mouthfeel. Dryish licorice and lavender aftertaste with roasty herbal buttery notes. Interesting and unusual. Nice and highly drinkable, too. (0.33l bottle, from a cheese shop in Amsterdam.) 6,3,7,3,14=3.3

Second rating: Medium beige head. Deep dark red body with lots of big floaties. Fruity caramelly herbal aroma with anise and cinnamon notes. Dryish spicy herbal fruity taste with cinnamon and raspberry notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dry cinnamon anise and spice aftertaste with raspberry notes. Nice, drinkable, unusual. (0.33l bottle, from Kihoskh, Copenhagen.) 7,3,6,3,13=3.3

2007 bottle, 750 ml with caged cork. Ready with a big Duvel glass in case of a gusher… but nope, not a problem this time. Pours reddish brown, fizzy like a soda, thin head. Smell is, um, like a rubber inner tube in the glass! Definitely, this got corked like a red wine. But a light herbal quality in the bottle. Wha hoppen? Okay, I can get past the nose and sip some of the beer, which is not as herbal as, well, other traditional ales, in fact, milder than some other old beers I’ve kept too long. So beyond the spoiled nose I find a slightly fruity ale, not too spicy and herbal, with a slight bit of tart marred by too much horseblanket. It’s a sign. I need to clear out my cellar!

Bottle@Voldby Ølmesse - Dark brown/red pour with tan head. Sweet spicy grainy malts, caramel, dark dried fruits, backing of hop nuances with floral and herbal notes. Pretty impressive.
