Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

Bottle@Voldby Γlmesse - Dark brown/red pour with tan head. Sweet spicy grainy malts, caramel, dark dried fruits, backing of hop nuances with floral and herbal notes. Pretty impressive.

Currently, itβs a trend to use gruit. This Jopen beer was one of the first to reinstate this old brewing tradition. Itβs a very grainy beer, full of spices. Really tasty and quite good.

Dobre piwo o zapachu octu winnego. Troche jakby sour ale to bylo. Rubinowo czerwony kolor dosc intensywny, piana kremowa. Na ustak pozostawia posmak karmelowy. Finisz rozgrzewajacy z domieszka przypraw, a zwlaszcza jakis ziol.

Bottle, 8.5%. Medicinal and spicy aroma, sweet brown sugar. Clear dark brown colour. Big stable light brown head. Sweet, medicinal flavour, liquorice, aniseed. Medium bitterness. Herbal finish, quite boozy. Porsesnaps aroma and flavour. Well, it is OK, but more interesting than good.

Bottle. Pours clear copper brown with stable light tan head. Clear aroma of malt with notes of spice, roast and dried fruit. Spicy and malty flavour with clear notes of caramel and hops. Sweetish aftertaste. Very interesting.

33 cl. bottle @ Gollem. I still strongly dislike the Jopen glass. Pours lightly reddish dark brown, light off-white / tanned head, reasonably big and creamy. Nose is strongly sweet with lots of sticky liquorish, brown sugar, caramelized, very sticky and thick spices. Taste is sweet syrup, roots, light dark vegetables, thick liquorish, bitter spices but also very sweet ones in the beginning, lightly herbal, lightly bitter in the back. Creamy β better than expected enjoyed it.
