Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

330ml bottle watching Series 4 of The Man in the High Castle, thanks MonsterMagnet for this! Pours a hazed deep brown with reddish hue, off white head. Rich herbal aroma, continuing to taste. Interesting herbal concoction, sweet dark toffee and liquorice hints, dark malt, dried dark fruits. Presents an old-style ale character feel pretty well. Not a go-to beer style for me, but this is pleasantly warming on a cold Autumn evening.

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of caramel, cereals, dandelion syrup, alcohol, flowers and herbs. Pours cloudy amber brown color with thick creamy tan-like head, some residue floating and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with sweet toasted malt and dried fruity, following is grassy, herbal and slightly medicinal, mouthfeel is mild spicy, while finish is mild bitter. 0,33 l bottle. Pours hazy reddish brown with medium, quite quickly dissipating light tan head. Nose is yeast, sweet, hard herbal candy, but also malty, toffee, and a bit earthy, light alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter. Finish is long, herbal with much more expressed bitterness. Alcohol is quite well hidden, but it warms the stomach in a nice way.

Tap, café De Geus, Enschede. Cherry flavor. Herbal with some bitterness, due to herbs, not to hops. Sweet and full bodied, just a bit creamy. Some red berries-like sourness.

330ml bottle. Amber brown colour with reddish tinge, beige foamy head leaving lots of lacing and aroma of malt, spiced, herby. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, molasses, floral, herbal, spiced, with earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, lingering sweet malty spiced finish. Quite drinkable.
