Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.

This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

Malty and sweet, slightly boozy. Flavor reminds me a fair bit of a kvass. Surprisingly refreshing.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St Edmunds on 20th March 2021. Pours deep reddish brown with virtually no foam or lace. Fruity aroma of berries and spices. Sweet berry fruits in-mouth, with fresh apple and a finish of caramel malt and spiciness. Interestingly familiar, almost like Spingo from the Blue Anchor at Helston, Cornwall! Full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Different.

Bottle. Pours a clear ruby red, small head. Aroma is herbal and fruity, sweet red fruit. Some cherry, juniper, thyme, floral, honey. Really nice and interesting, I always like trying a new Gruit beer. Medium body. Flavour is sweet and malty, slightly boozy even, but mostly sweet, with honey and floral notes, caramel. Light bitterness, lots of flowery notes, very herbal, intense juniper, thyme. Loads of fruity herbal Gruit notes, hint of cherry. Really lovely, an excellent Gruit flavoured beer - you don't always need hops!

Roodbruin bier met mooie stevige schuimkraag. Smaak is zoet en kruidig met iets van vanille, kaneel en kruidnagel. Lijkt wel een kerstbier.

28-08-20 // KKR-Tasting - Special Ingredients: very surprised by this one. Great balance. A malt forward body. Darker malts. Bread. Dried fruits. Warming up more herbs/gruit. Mint (polaris like), dry frassy herbalness blending in the sweeter malt body.

On tap at Gollem - Amstelstraat, pours a cloudy, murky dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out lots of earthy notes, soil, dark fruits, and a bit of pine needles. Flavour is very fruity and earthy, with plenty of pine needles, earth, dark fruits, and caramel. Really comes together nicely - the earth, spiciness, fruitiness - really solid.
