Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

T: sweet fig & raisin, spicy liquorice, clove & wet cinnamon, speculoos malt.
F: herbal hops, sweet-spicy liquorice, dried fruit, warming liqueur-like alcohol.
P: medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.
Never realised this was kind of a 'classic' already. Very interesting desserty beer.

Once again completing the wheel of styles with an ale reminiscent of a bock but more spiced. Very malty, would make a great winter warmer.
Thanks Dennis N. !

1407 recipe. Never had a Koyt so not sure how authentic this is but it tastes good. Not as herbal as expected. Smells like a barleywine, tastes like a bw slash Belgian tripel with a bit of sweet gage. Good for finishing up report cards.

Pours light to mid brown, a bit murky. Average sized off-white head, good enough retention and a bit of lacing. The aroma shows a very nice malty depth, with a half roasted, half caramel base, plus nutty and maybe biscuity notes. A slightly balsamic herbal touch and maybe a hint of spiciness too. Pretty good intensity and nice definition. Taste notes: deep, soft malty base as the smell suggested (caramel, roastiness and nuttiness in good balance), with an earthy feel on the back of things. There's light fruitiness (ripe pear) and a half herbal/half balsamic feel in finish and aftertaste. Medium to high sweetness, medium bitterness; a slight sweet edge in the mouth and a balanced finish. Nice intensity and definition. Sort of 'rustic' but still polished. Medium to dense bodied with medium carbonation, resulting in a semi-full, quite lively mouthfeel. Not that I have that much experience with historical beer recreations, but this feels much more like a vintage/classic (meaning 20th century) take on a belgian bruin. Nonetheless, a very interesting, quite rich and well made beer.
