Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

Poured at Shelton Festival, cloudy brown with small beige head. The aroma is spice, earth, and wood. Medium body, caramel, spice, earth, boozy, good.

Bottle shared with Viลกnja666. Thanks! Dark amber, minimal off-white head. Aromatic, marzipan, caramel, cola, dried fruits, berries and wood. Sweet with dark cherry flavour. Sticky, light to medium body, soft carbonation, alcohol is hidden, sweet finish. Very interesting, nicely made, although one might not be satisfied with some outcomes.

(Bottle) Pours cloudy amber brown with thin off-white head - not the prettiest beer. Nice and unusual aroma - toffee, raisins, spices. Medium bodied, slight stickiness with good carbonation. Great taste - toffee malt provides a rich somewhat sweet backbone with plenty of interesting spicy and herbal notes. Interesting, unusual and very drinkable.

Thanks Domagoj M! I was 300% sure I'd had it before, apparently not. Yay. Murky brown body with an off white head. Strong spicy aroma, heavy on the gale I assume (came off somewhere between eucalyptus, mint and fennel), fighting a heavy, heavy dark maltiness. While the heavy maltiness remains in the taste, it's very well balanced by the fresh herbal notes, well hidden alcohol. Interesting, nice, a very fine beer.

Bottle at home. Brown cloudy color. Beige head, disappearing. Not a very nice aroma for me. Taste is okay, but not very special.

0.33l bottle. Malty aroma, spice notes, caramel, light fruit notes. Hazy brown color with amber shades, white head. Malty taste, caramel, spice, fruit notes, light alcohol notes, light bitter, extra light sweet notes. Full body, slick to oily texture, soft carbonation and malty ans spicy bitter finish with light alcohol notes. Ok.
