Jopen Koyt is brewed according to the Haarlem Brouwerskeur from 1407 (city recipe). This beer is brewed with gruit, a medieval spice blend with ritual-picked gale. According to a myth, gale can be hallucinating, to avoid this, gale must be picked by naked witches at full moon. You bought the ingredient gruit from the gruit gentleman (later corrupted to the Gruijter = grocer). Picked gale is decisive in the herbal mixture of Jopen Koyt.
This reddish-brown beer has a strong spicy (menthol) aroma and a mildly sweet taste. The dark malt provides caramel tones. The spicy aspect appears again in the aftertaste.

Bottled 330ml. -from Pivoteka Zagreb as Koyt Gruitbier. Darker amber coloured, medium sized tan head, dried fruits in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, yeast, heavy spicy and notes of herbs with some dried fruits and light alcohol in the finish. Interesting but far from the best.

Tap at Jopen. Creamy deep sweet malt tones. Deep sugary nuttiness. Not unlike a Dubbel, but with some added slick molasses, almost vanilla tones. Cool, classic beer.

Bottle from Drinkshop. Surprisingly balanced and easy drinking. Alcohol hidden well. Considerable caramelly malty base, along with the associated sweetness. Well balanced by the herbs, anise stands out for me, but overall balance is quite nice.

Bottle. Hazy brown beer with red shine and small beige head, lasting a while but then disappearing. Aroma is soon malt, toffe, even kind of rosemary note. Taste starts bitter, some herbs, raisins. Oily texture, alcohol well hidden. Nice beer.

Bottle. Red with a shade of brown. Small short-lived head. Aroma of red fruits, barley and herbs. Taste is red fruits (cherries, plums?), caramell, malts, herbs, spices, alcohol, liquorice, clove and maybe even Port. Aftertaste is sticky sweet, alcoholic and tastes like cough syrup. Strong carbonation, reminds me of Coca Cola. First Gruit I ever had. Interesting brew, feels like a mix between a dark Bock, a Barleywine and a pack of throat lozenges. It’s certainly good but I’m not sure I will ever it buy again.
