Every beer has a story, here's Punkin Ale...

A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, brown sugar and spices. As the season cools, this is the perfect beer to warm up with.

Punkin Ale is named after the seriously off-centered southern Delaware extravaganza Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made its debut as it claimed first prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest. Yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business!

Since its debut, we've brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around Sept. 1 each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it's usually gone by Thanksgiving.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass. Aroma is dominant pumpkin and spices as expected. Appearance is cloudy orange/brown with fair sparkle, small white head with poor retention and no lacing. Taste is pumpkin sweet flavors with spices. Palate is medium bodied with thick texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, a good but straightforward take on the genre.

Tap at Julianโ€™s. It pours clear deep amber with a decent white head. The nose is sweet, spiced, ginger, cinnamon, pumpkin pie, carrot cake and caramelized sugars. The taste is smooth, sweet, warming, pudding, pumpkin pie, carrot cake, rich spice, dried fruits, orange peel and some alcohol warmth towards the finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and slightly oily mouth - feel. Sort of works somehow.

Bottle An almost clear one, pale amber in color and with a small, dense, off-white head. The aroma is mostly on the spiced side, with some bready, caramel malts. Meaty hints too. Itโ€™s medium bodied and with a nice carbonation level, quite dry and with a nice bitterness. Meaty, caramel and bready flavor with a good dash of spices. Too much or the wrong ones according to my palate. Decent though. Lasting spiced, bready finish with the spices dominating. Well, itโ€™s not bad for a pumpkin spice ale, but itโ€™s not my kind of beer anyway. 150622

2016 re-rate: Tap at Jโ€™s. Very well-balanced. Light vanilla, but overall very light on the pumpkin spice nonsense. Good chewy pumpkin puree and yam notes. Solid pumpkin brew. Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Brownish copper color with a small off-white head. Pumpkin, clove, cinnamon & brown sugar on the nose. Medium-light body. Sweet on the palate with a slightly spiced sweet finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Punkin Ale (2016) on 05 Nov 2016 at 15:53 - Score: 7. Original review text: Very well-balanced. Light vanilla, but not much pumpkin spice showing. Good chewy pumpkin puree and yam notes.
