Double Stout, part of Shepherd Neame’s Classic Collection range of beers, is based on a recipe discovered in a coded brewers’ log unearthed in the brewery archives.
Made with a blend of four different malts with a firm bitterness courtesy of local Kentish hops, it is a velvety smooth beer with dry, burnt flavours and cocoa and coffee notes.

13.11.2013, 0,5l bottle @ home:
Big creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet, dark malts, chocolate, vanilla, sugar, roasted grain, grass, puffed rice. Taste is very watery and kind of metallic, dark malts, grass, burnt caramel, harsh hay, sugar, hints of chocolate. Medium bitterness, very thin body. So boring!

(Bottle, 0.5 l - BBE Jun 2014, at Hilpeä Hauki, 20131109) The beer poured almost black. Its head was medium sized and almost white. Aroma had roasted malts, chocolate and sweet English hops. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste had chocolate, swetness and bitterness. A very balanced and tasty stout but it left a bit watery overalll feeling.

Brown 500ml bottle: BBD unknown. Poured into a pint tankard on 5th Nov 2013. It’s black: the head is deep with a creamy foam texture and tan coloured, it looks great. Roasted and almost burnt malts fill the nose, rich coffee notes rise out of the tankard and you somehow know it’s going to be dry on the tongue because of the aroma. The smell didn’t lie, this is a dry Stout: it has Bourneville Chocolate within its flavours along with ground coffee and just plain over roasted malts. Any real bitterness is always covered by the semi-creamy body feel, although it is just under the surface throughout.

Nose is burnt toast, slight cereal touch of cola. Taste is smoke, plums, licorice. Slight coffee in the finish with some latte and cocoa. Mouthfeel is not full enough and too carbonated. Much better than I was expecting, not bad at all.
