1997 Vintage I purchase this bottle in Texas in 1997 and its moved with me at least three times, and was lost in a box and forgotten for a long period of time. Tonight this will be flat beer number two. Pours a solid dark brown/inky black color with no head at all. Smells of raisins, prunes, plums, molasses, alcohol, brown sugar, cherries, maple syrup, vodka, vanilla, wood. There’s a lot going on in the nose, and its not all bad like some of the other reviews elude to. The flavor is not quite what the aroma promised me. This is very sweet and syrupy up front with lots of brown sugar, molasses, and maple. I get a meatiness, if that’s possible, midway through. Lots of fruit comes next with cherries, prunes, and plums, along with a bit of ash, chocolate and ethanol. The finish is a long lingering burnt sugar, caramel, molasses bitterness that sticks to the palette like oil. Thick viscous body with a thick syrupy mouthfeel, and zero carbonation. I had this fresh in 1997 and drain poured it, but my palette wasn’t ready for it then. Tonight I enjoyed sipping on this for the better part of the night. I think that my bottle somehow fared better than some others because I have had samples of this recently that I didn’t enjoy. I’m glad I saved a "good" bottle of this amazingly complex boundary stretching elixir.

Not a lot of soy, sediment has been kept to minimum, so sweet - alcohol seems to still be here. Probably only got 6oz from this one.

1997 vintage bottle shared at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma is dominated by rich dark chocolate and massive caramel, licorice and toffee. Taking a sip is such a powerful burst of flavour, super sweet with an underlying bitterness and a thick mouthfeel like pouring molasses and melted chocolate straight down your throat, leading into a long caramel and alcohol warm finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Intense and lovely but not one to drink much of.

Opaque very dark brown beer, no head, no carbonation. Nose is mostly marmite but has a little chocolate. Palate is semi soft and dry. So to the taste - wasn’t expecting much from this much maligned beer but I’m going to stand with my old mucker Henrik Papso on this and say it’s a fine beer. Immediately reminded me of a vintage port. Rich cherry - blackcurrant and a little tobacco. There is a big splash of Madeira in here as well and then chocolate, coffee and marmite. Finishes dry with a warming afterglow. You just need to get past the nose to appreciate this one!

Bottle. Pours a thick black with a brown head that starts at the edges and dissipates completely. Aroma has a deep dark dessert wine with some caramel, sweet fruit and a slight astringent note. Flavor has noted of dark fruit and a bit of sweetness with a hint of astringent acid.

Barely any head. Opaque black body. Intense chocolatey soy sauce aroma with earthy musty alcohol and linoleum notes. Dry-sweet chocolate and soy sauce taste with earthy alcoholic notes. Massively full mouthfeel. Hot, almost burning, dense, thick mouthfeel. Dry-sweet alcohol, earth, and chocolate aftertaste with musty soy sauce notes. Intense, dense, closed flavour. Bottle @ home. 1995 vintage. I was warned by two people to avoid this beer at all costs but I did not heed their advice. Cork broke upon opening. After removing the cork, I was appalled at the incredibly offensive, unbelievably strong diesel, soy sauce aroma, even from several feet away. The aroma nearly induces vomit (and I mean VERY nearly). Black appearance with no head. Very strong caramel, huge fruity, toffee, wood, kerosene, trinitrotoluene, soy sauce flavor with a major burn (is that DDT that I am tasting?) on the finish. This is the most offensive, undrinkable beer that I’ve ever come across- this is the worst tasting flavor that I’ve ever come across. I would prefer to drink a keg of Keystone Ice over a two ounce glass of this. Absolutely obnoxious. There is no doubt in my mind that I will have nightmares about this beer and my experience. Please heed my warning: do not ever, EVER try this beer!
