Gildenbier (Guild Beer) is brewed according to the centuries-old tradition of the archers’ guild of the town of Diest. Gildenbier is a dark, special beer that is surprisingly tasty with chocolate desserts.

Bottled. Copper colour. Roasty and fairly sweet. Mildly spicy. Fruity and somewhat yeasty. Soft, balanced and very enjoyable.

(BBdate is 08/2004. That is shortly - but still quite young. If it were quite old, it might have been an original from brewery Cerckel. This existed in two versions, 9° and 11°, and was a Belgian top-product. The Haacht version never came close. Dull, sweet, inoffensive at best. And with the recent revamping of Keizer Karelbier, I dreaded what became of the former Cerckel glory) Dark chestnut colour, slightly hazy; slim rim of yellowish head. Sweet nose, dark candi syrup (unfermented), bit of hazelnut aroma. Taste is slightly bitterish, mostly sweet however, like "Traubenzucker". Unpleasant flavour of human sweat.Very thin mouthfeel with a slight thread of oiliness. Artificial sweetness, maybe liquorice, lingering in the aftertaste. Sad reminiscence. I wonder how long this is going to survive. Haacht has an unending record of beers, taken from other breweries, left to fade and die. Not all of them were even bad.

A red-brown beer with a light brown head. The aroma is of berries, fruit, wood, and plums. The flavor is of overripe fruit especially plums and wood, but it is a little thin in the middle, before a good hoppy end sets in.

Red-brown beer. White head. Malty and fruity flavours. Nice litlle glass. In contrast of the other raters on this page, I liked this beer.
