Gregorius shimmers in the glass with a rich dark maroon colour. In the nose herbal and licorice aromas dominate, which are combined with ripe fruit notes. It presents a strong malt body, which is characterised by coffee and roasted aromas. Honey from the region and Alsatian wine yeast conjure up a nice sweet and sour game on the palate. Slightly bitter chocolate flavors accompany the warming finish of this powerful Trappist beer. Deep - Thoughtful.

Bottle from www.slijterijhetfust.nl and split at the EU themed 2nd Ipswich bottle share. Pours a deep dark red/brown colour with a medium sized beige colour head. Aroma is fruity, caramel, quite sweet, with alcohol and spiced notes. Medium sweetness and bitterness. Medium body, surprisingly thin though, average carbonation. Finish is dry with lingering alcohol edge.

Bottle. Murky brown with small foamy beige head, berry and caramel aroma, high carbonation, caramel taste with alcohol undertones and dark berries, thin body, long caramel-berry finish. Very satisfying, better than I’ve expected.

From Austria’s only Trappist brewery. Pours cacao brown from the bottle and leaves a tan head that fizzes and dissipates. Impenetrable. No evident lacing. Aroma is a heady concoction of rich caramel, honey, chocolate, and cognac. A good start. The taste fails to follow through at the same level. Warm, alcoholic, again cognac, but also raw alcohol set atop chocolate and caramel. Not a bad beer but not the same complexity of some of the better Trappist beers I’ve tasted. It certainly fails to disguise the 10.2 ABV nearly as well. Finishes bitter with alcoholic notes. Heavy bodied. Good. Not great.

Dit bier heb ik gedronken met de schoonfamilie. Het is een lekker donkerrood bier, met weinig schuim.

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with a tall tan head. Smells tart and vinous, like grapes, sour milk, vinegar, yeast and spices. The taste adds overripe bananas, red wine, dried fruit (mostly prunes), dark fruit jam, a bit of chocolate, burnt caramel (mostly the bitter part than the sweetness), rosemary and a warm alcohol finish. Quite a complex and enjoyable brew.
