BBIS is brewed using the same oat-forward and British specialty malt recipe that we followed with the original release in 2013. Over the years we have adjusted and enhanced it, introducing new techniques to produce a bigger, richer, and silkier beer. Most of the barrels in this year’s blend have spent about 18 months aging in 8- to 12-year-old bourbon barrels, with the addition of some younger BBIS to contribute to the complexity of this bold imperial stout.
Tasting notes: Warming aromas of cocoa, milk chocolate and bourbon. The sip offers a silky mouthfeel, with vanilla and rich milk chocolate mid palate. Background notes of smoke, licorice and coffee are wrapped up with some cherry liquor at the finish.
Malts: C-60, Cara Munich, Chocolate, Crisp Pale Chocolate, ESB, Pale, Roast Barley
Hops: Magnum

Black with brown head. Woody alcoholic nose and palate, both so strong nothing else comes through

Had 2013, 2014, and 2015 on tap at the brewery during the 2015 release. One was oxidized and one was super diacetyl. The 2015 was neither but a thinner body than I want. Not super sweet or super boozy but definitely both, again a thicker body would help. Not particularly interesting or worthy of revisiting.

Draft pour at the release party at the brewery. 2013-2015 on draft, and tried side by side. Near black pour with a quick fade head. Heavy roasted malt aroma with a slight chocolate. Thick body, chocolate and a toast finish. Just hints of bourbon throughout. 2014 was a boozy mess for me. I much prefer the 2013 over the other two. Settled down nice. Going to combine all three into this rating. Overall, an average barrel stout. Interesting.

On tap at Brouwer's Cafe for Big Wood 2014, pours jet black with a small brown head. Aroma is super rich, with loads of bourbon barrels, vanilla, and chocolate. Flavour is ultra complex, with amazingly rich and elegant bourbon barrels, followed by vanilla, and some light cocoa. The bourbon couldn't be used much better than this. Finished roasty and lightly boozy. This is seriously up there with the best barrel aged impie stouts. Phenomenal.

Draft - Boozy bourbon and vanilla with oak notes. Deep jet brown with a nice brown head. Bourbon, dark fruit, barrel notes, pecan and a warming heat going down. Lots of bourbon but nice.
