This beer is a Bamberg-style Rauchbier. The town of Bamberg in Germany originated the style of smoked beers. These beers are made with a dose of smoked barley. Our recipe relies on a light bock recipe for its base and contains about 20% imported smoked barley. The noble German hops are used to balance the taste into a unique beer drinking experience.

On tap at Dragonmead, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma reveals plenty of campfire smoke, with a sort of meaty character. Flavour is big, with lots of campfire smoke, some gently sweet caramely bready malt, and some smoked meat. Quite complex for the style, with plenty of depth. Very good.

Sampled from the tap at the brewery. Pours a clear amber brown with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice smoke note with a bit dark grains underlying. Flavor has a hint of dark grain but is mainly a nice smoke note. Finish is thin.

Big thanks to my sister Lori for sending down a growler of this. My sister ROCKS! Pours out amber with gold edges and full tan head. The aroma has malts, chocolate, bacon and a light dash of bandaid. The taste has modest levels of malt and a bit of chocolate here and there. Midway the smoke shows up as the beer thins out creating an earthy – bacony – slightly rubbery bandiad-y mélange of flavor notes. It is a decent enough beer and the smoke certainly doesn’t overwhelm (for most I’m guessing that’s a good thing).

On tap at Dragonmead. Deep red-brown body, dense cream head. Distinctive smoked peat aroma. Creamy, light, peaty body, emphasizing the smoked malts. If anything, this wasn’t brave enough with the smoked characteristics. It felt too watered down.
