To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewing’s long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

Bottle from saveur-biere.com. Golden, slightly amber, clear body, with a creamy, frothy, white head, that leaves a lot of lacing. Interesting, fresh aroma of lemongrass, white wine, honey, hay, candy. Taste of grass, honey, citrus, candy, white wine. Mouthfeel is medium, oily to creamy, with a lively carbonation and finishes with grass, citrus and some candy and a pretty long bitterness and dryness. Very interesting, unique and greatly balanced Pale Ale, that samples the Nelson Sauvin hop variety very well! Pretty underrated in my opinion, propably because it is quite different to other Pale Ales and hence not for everyone’s taste.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured a clear golden colour with a thin white head. Malty aroma with notes of honey and straw. Initial flavours were somewhat waxy with dried fruit and grass. Finish was very dry, but somewhat light with some corn and apricots.

Bottle from Seijo Ishii in Kyoto station, I thought I’d already rated this but I guess it slipped through my fingers, oh well here we go again. It pour a light amber with a mild hoppy nose but I felt that the malts were a bit too forward for a Pale Ale. It was good but unimpressive.

Dark blond colour. Flavour of floral and citrusy hops balanced well with a nice malty background.

Nice soft IPA/American pale ale. Freshly bitter and fruity, thanks to the delicious Nelson Sauvin hop.

Bottled 355ml. -from Za Popen’t Pivoteka, Ljubljana. Unclear darker golden coloured, medium sized creamy white head, orange and light honey in the nose. Moderate malty, acidic/bitter fruity and light hoppy taste with hint of caramel in the finish. To be honest really nothing exciting here.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy light amber with airy but stable white head. Clear aroma of hops, citrus and flowers. Hoppy onset, gradually replaced by intense flowery notes with touches of fruit and citrus. Lingering, dry finish. Well-balanced. A nice one.

slightly hazy golden colour; massive, long lasting off-white head; aroma of hop, honey and some strange salty-sourish thing (maybe sour cabbage?); taste is dominated by long lasting hoppy bitterness, though some honey can also be felt.

Gentle aroma, honey, malts very slight citrus. Taste is sweet, not especially hoppy, good malt. Hints of honey and cereal, leading to a resin finish. Lightly bitter. Very drinkable and refreshing, more than the sum of it’s parts.
