Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

On tap at the Mad Mex in Cranberry. Gnarly, my description exactly. Good example of a crude rude, high alky style. Aren’t all barley wines gnarly? I’m not good enough for this beer. Could not finish the glass. Syrupy terrible viscous liquid. Just like any other Lagunitas I’ve tasted, over the top.

On tap at Cato’s in Oakland, CA. It was served up in a half pint glass (due to its gravity). It pours a clear striking amber with lasting off white foam ring. The aroma comes across as complex. I seem to be smelling wood and shrubbery. Tough to pin down. I get pale malts (of all things), caramelized malts and faint toffee. Smooth and melded aroma. The flavor is malty and fruity from a mixture of cherries, sweet dark grapes, a mild raisin note, prunes and sugar coated plums. Just like the aroma the flavors seem smooth and melded even as the beer’s temperature runs up toward room ambient.

2007 bomber. Pours thick. Amber color with a decent beige head. Smells of brown sugar (light molasses) and caramel, and underlying dark fruits. Medium bodied with creamy carbonation. The flavor is brown sugar, overripe plum, and citrus and resin hop. The finish is rather dry after the sugar leaves, and there is a very nice bitter build up. Definite fine lacing as the glass level drops. Alcohol is noticeable, but it doesn’t distract from the other elements. Beats a milkshake anyday.

Bottled. A hazy dark amber beer with a fast disappearing tan head. The aroma is sweet with powerful notes of caramel, but also lighter notes of malt. The flavor is sweet malty with powerful notes of caramel as well as lighter notes of alcohol, leading to a dry bitter caramel finish. The body is thick - somewhat like drinking caramel soup - if that exists.

Twenty Aught-6 bottle from Bevmo?; Been in the cellar for over a yearl Nose of raisins, caramel, and very light alcohol; rusty red with a small beige head; flavor of caramel, fig newtons, and a slight hint of hop bitterness; finish shows light alcohol warmth and very slight bitterness. Pretty good barlewine; glad I let it rest for over a year in the cellar.
