Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

Pours caramel brown with minimal light tan head. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel, and slight hops. Sweet malty flavor with hints of grapefruit. Not as hoppy as a lot of American barley wines, more true to the style. Full body with minimal carbonation and a thick, syrupy, stick mouthfeel. A decent barley wine that I will probably have again.

Amber beer with lasting ivory yellow head. Strong bready malt aroma mixed with weaker notes of tangerine and peach hops, and some sweet alcohol notes like sherry. Dry and malty flavour with some hop flavour and bitterness. The malt is bock-like and becomes cloying.

Bottle. I dunno what I was thinking, but I wasn’t expecting much from this one... I thought it might be an overhoped attempt at another high ABV Lagunitas offering. Surprise! Color is that lovely tawny brown with a little bit of a head that leaves a nice film on the surface with a few soapy-looking bubbles here and there. Aromas are pineapple and sweet and sticky malt, but the flavor is where this really comes into its own. Sweet candi and caramel malts intermingle with fruits like prune, dates, figs and apricots and yield to a bit of a pine and pineapple hops finish. Lovely.

Bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville. Pours ruby red with a small head that doesn’t stick around. Aroma of nicely balanced hops and caramelly malt. Same applies to the taste. Hop bitterness, pine, lemon, brown sugar, caramel. Nice, chewy mouthfeel. Yum!

Bottle as shown. Pours a clear copper amber color with a medium frothy light tan head. The aroma is raisin and brown sugar. Decent lacing on the glass. The taste is a sweet malt and fruit. Hides the alcohol well and easy to drink. An impressive barley wine from Lagunitas.

Really good! Pours with a large, creamy, off-white head with lots of lacing. Nice red body. Lots of floral hops in the aroma. Taste is big, malty, caramel. Mouth coating, very syrupy. Amazing! Re-rate: 11% for well under $5 per bomber! I thought this was one of the best buys of the year last year, and one of the most underated beers of 2008...let’s see how the new 2009 compares: Nice tan head on a ruby body. Good lace. Toffee and orange zest, yeast aroma. Taste is caramalized pineapple with burnt maple. Syurpy mouth...I would give this years batch a 3.7 instead of last years 4.2.
